Alonso, Nakajima and Buemi achieve Le Mans dream

AP-1VZNWFC4W2111_news

Trio win 24-hour classic race by two laps for Toyota as Neel Jani finishes fourth.

Fernando Alonso has completed the second leg of motorsport’s Triple Crown after he won the classic Le Mans 24-hour race alongside Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemiand Kazuki Nakajima for Toyota’s first ever win.

The trio managed to hold off the other Toyota Gazoo Racing car of Kamui Kobayashi, Jose Maria Lopez and Mike Conway in the LMP1 class by just two laps with Rebellion Racing’s Thomas Laurent, Mathias Beche and Gustavo Menezes 12 laps down by the end. Here is all you need to know:

– Alonso has made no secret of the fact that he wants to join Briton Graham Hill as the only drivers in history to complete the motorsport Triple Crown of the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1, Le Mans in endurance racing and the Indy 500 in the Verizon IndyCar Series.

– The Spaniard won the Monaco GP in 2006 for Renault and 2007 for McLaren before switching his sights to the Indy 500 where he could only finish 24th in 2017.

– He moved his focus to the FIA World Endurance Championship for 2018 with victory at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps followed by this Le Mans win.

– After starting on pole position, it was nip and tuck between the two Toyotas before Buemi was penalised with a 60-second stop-and-go penalty for speeding in a caution zone shortly after night fell on Saturday forcing Alonso and Nakajima to claw back the other Toyota.

– The trio, though, completed an astonishing 388 laps in their hybrid Toyota to take the LMP1 crown with Japan’s Nakajima the man to bring the car home.

– Nakajima stopped just past the finish line to greet an emotional Alonso and Buemi, who hopped on the car to celebrate a maiden Le Mans win for all three drivers.

– Thirty-six-year-old Alonso revealed, “Let’s see if I can achieve the Indy 500 soon.”

– Former Scuderia Toro Rosso driver Buemi added, “So tough to watch. Minutes felt like hours. Until the car crossed the line with Kazuki, I could not believe it.”

– Nakajima explained, “We had a bad experience in 2016 (his car lost power when leading on the final lap), so I had to be really focused until the chequered flag.”

– Swiss driver Neel Jani just missed out on a podium place by one lap as his Rebellion Racing car finished 13 laps back alongside Andre Lotterer and Bruno Senna.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing sign new Honda power unit deal

Horner confirms relationship for 2019 and 2020 ahead of French Grand Prix.

AP-1VSX6JH8N2111_news

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner has hailed the new power unit deal with Honda Motor Co Ltd that will see his cars use the Japanese manufacturer for 2019 and 2020.

Honda will replace Renault as the driving force behind their Formula 1 title ambitions after 12 years and eight world championship titles with the French manufacturer, while the team will continue to race under the name of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

The Briton revealed, “This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of an exciting new phase in Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s efforts to compete not just for grand prix wins but for what is always our goal – championship titles.

“We have always taken decisions such as this dispassionately and with only one criteria in mind – do we believe the outcome will allow us to compete at a higher level. After careful consideration and evaluation we are certain this partnership with Honda is the right direction for the Team.

“We have been impressed by Honda’s commitment to F1, by the rapid steps they have made in recent times with our sister team Scuderia Toro Rosso (which started in 2018), and by the scope of their ambition, which matches our own. We look forward to working with Honda in the coming years and to racing together in pursuit of F1’s biggest prizes.

“We would like to thank Renault for the past 12 years, a period during which we experienced some incredible moments together. Our focus for the rest of this year is still very much on delivering the best results possible in the 2018 Championship.”

Takahiro Hachigo, President & Representative Director of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. said: “Having established a good relationship with Scuderia Toro Rosso, we have decided to extend our Formula 1 involvement to the other team in the Red Bull family, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, as from the 2019 season.

“Having two teams means we can access twice as much data as previously. We believe that working with both Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing will allow us to get closer to our goal of winning races and championships, building two strong partnerships.”
