California DMV takes orders for retro legacy license plates

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is now taking orders for license plates that replicate those issued from the 1950s to the 1970s. The program was created to give classic car collectors a way to get plates that match the era of their vehicles. (We know more than a few collectors who are simply painting their modern plates in retro colors to achieve the same effect.)

The California Department of Motor Vehicles tells us they need at least 7,500 orders by Jan. 1, 2015, to print their “legacy license plates,” which can be ordered in a choice of retro blue, black or yellow backgrounds. Owners must pay $50 and fill out a form, which is available on the DMV website. But don’t wait! If the state does not meet the order threshold, it will refund the application fees.
